The Toy Run “for the kids” kicks off the season for giving

One of our favorite charities to help throughout the year is Toys for Tots. The thought of a child opening a toy on Christmas morning when he / she didn’t think they were getting anything from Santa is truly heartwarming. As a member of Delaware Valley ABATE Small Talk Media takes a big role in marketing, securing press and covering the Toy Run each year. This year was one of the biggest turnouts in recent history stretching a line bikers from Spring Garden street to well past the Ben Franklin bridge. Thousands of Toy were donated while everyone enjoyed a great show by Live at the Fillmore at the Electric Factory. Be on the lookout for Shots for Tots, our next Toys for Tots event coming very soon..

New Website: Cuisine 365

Business has been booming for our friends at Cuisine 365, but a lackluster website didn’t quite match their brand image. As the official catering company for the Philadelphia 76ers and just like the 6ers Cuisine had to step up their game to compete in this highly competitive market.
They came to Small Talk Media with a few ideas;

  • They needed the site to be image driven so they can show off their greatest asset… their amazing food!
  • The site had to look great on any mobile device
  • They wanted an events calendar that could be updated easily by a member of their staff
  • They wanted multiple navigation bars for their array of pages

After a month of work we came out with a site that had everything they wanted along with a few cool add ons like the “book an event” bar, news page and enhanced contact forms. We were also able to train their employee Monica on how to update the site using the wordpress CMS. She was a little overwhelmed but we recorded the whole session and sent her home with a custom Youtube video that she can review at her leisure.
We really enjoy working with people that care about their business and appreciate our hard work. Cuisine 365 has and will continue to be a great partner for years to come!

Awesome Drinks Made with Tequila

1. THE VAMPIRA

Like a cross between a Bloody Maria and a Paloma, this slightly spicy cocktail is lightened with lemon juice and a splash of grapefruit soda, Cholula hot sauce makes it just a little hot, and Clamato adds complexity. Don’t worry, you won’t taste the clam juice. (Though this would be an excellent accompaniment to a spread of oysters, shrimp, and clams.)

-INGREDIENTS…

  • ice
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 ounces blanco tequila (100% agave)
  • 1 teaspoon Mexican hot sauce such as Cholula
  • 1 ounce Clamato
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Mexican Squirt or other grapefruit soda
  • lemon wheel or wedge to garnish

-DIRECTIONS…

Fill a 10-ounce glass with ice. Scatter salt on the ice, then pour in the tequila, hot sauce, Clamato, and lemon juice. Top up the glass with grapefruit soda and stir gently. Garnish with lemon and serve immediately.

2. CINNAMON TARAMIND MARGARITA

This margarita is quite tart and refreshing, with the slightly earthy notes of tamarind and cinnamon coming through. Use a good 100% agave tequila, either blanco or reposado. The spice of the tequila echoes beautifully though this cocktail, and a little Cointreau adds a hint of orangey sweetness.
You can use tamarind concentrate, which comes as a thick liquid in a plastic jar. If you can only find tamarind blocks, don’t worry. Submerge an inch or so of the block in a few tablespoons of hot water for fifteen minutes. Mash to loosen, and discard any seeds or undissolved solids.

-INGREDIENTS…

  • For the rim:
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
  • For the cocktail:
  • 3/4 ounce tamarind concentrate
  • 2 ounces blanco or reposado tequila (100% agave)
  • 1 1/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 ounce Cointreau
  • ice
  • cinnamon stick to garnish, if desired

-DIRECTIONS…

Mix sugar, salt, cayenne, and cinnamon in a small bowl, then pour onto a saucer. Pour 2 tablespoons lime juice onto a second saucer. Turn serving glass (martini glass or old fashioned) in lime juice to coat the outer rim. Then spin glass in cayenne mixture, rotating slowly to coat.
Add tamarind concentrate, tequila, lime juice, simple syrup, lemon juice, and Cointreau to mixing glass. Fill with ice and shake well, about 30 seconds. Strain into serving glass. Garnish with cinnamon stick if desired.

3. PALOMA BRAVA

This sweet-and-sour spin on the classic Paloma. A generous dose of freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice brings this cocktail to life.

-INGREDIENTS…

  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 ounces reposado tequila, such as Don Julio
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice, from 1 lime
  • 2 ounces fresh orange juice, from 1 small orange
  • 6 ounces fresh grapefruit juice, from 1 small pink grapefruit
  • 4 ounces grapefruit soda
  • Agave nectar to taste
  • Garnish: Lime wheel

-DIRECTIONS…

Fill a large glass mug with ice. Add salt, tequila, lime, orange, and grapefruit juice. Stir gently. Top off with grapefruit soda, add agave nectar to taste and garnish with lime wheel.

4. THE SANTA CLARA

This easy-to-make and easy-to-sip drink is basically a “silver Tequila Collins.” It’s crisp and light…Perfect for a hot day…A healthy sprig of mint adds aroma and you can decorate the glass with thinly cut lemon wheels if you want to get fancy.

-INGREDIENTS…

  • 2 ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup
  • 3 dashes grapefruit bitters
  • Sparkling water
  • Garnish: lemon wheel and mint sprig

-DIRECTIONS…

Fill Collins glass with ice. Add tequila, lemon juice, simple syrup, and bitters directly into the glass, top with sparkling water and stir gently. Garnish with lemon wheel and mint sprig.

5. SIESTA

This is a spin on the Hemingway Daiquiri. Tequila adds warmth to bitter Campari; it’s a luxurious cocktail that’s a bit like sipping candied grapefruit peel.

-INGREDIENTS…

  • ice
  • 2 ounces silver tequila (100% agave)
  • 1/2 ounce Campari
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • garnish: grapefruit twist

-DIRECTIONS…

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add tequila, Campari, lime juice, grapefruit juice, and simple syrup. Shake well and strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with grapefruit twist.

Front Street Café plans to nourish, sustain Fishtown community

Philadelphia, PA –The Front Street Café, a vibrant new eatery opening on the corner of Thompson and Front streets, is the latest on a growing list of restaurants revitalizing the community of Philadelphia. There are so many new places to eat and drink in Philadelphia, such as different cafes and even some bakery options in the area. Places like The Front Street Café are just one of the many new franchises opening their doors up to the public.
Drawing inspiration from the unique character of the neighborhood, the creators of the Front Street Café aspire to do more than serve great food. From its inception, the restaurant has been designed to nourish this growing community, satisfying both body and spirit from sun up to lights out.
Long-time Fishtown resident Nicole Barclay, was driven by a strong sense of place and purpose to create a restaurant built around fresh, sustainable ingredients, with ample choices for people who have dietary preferences for health or lifestyle reasons. If you’re inspired by Nicole’s passion to start a coffee business, there’s no reason you couldn’t look at beginning your own. Often, starting a coffee shop can be difficult. This is usually because it’s not that easy to get customers coming to your business instead of some of the bigger coffee companies. However, there’s always the route of franchise opportunities instead of marketing a brand new coffee business. One of the best tips for opening a coffee shop is to ensure that potential customers can see inside the store. Casual brunch service will begin early and run through mid-afternoon seven days a week, with a menu offering sandwiches, salads, burgers … and breakfast tacos with more than 18 topping choices, including heirloom tomatoes, organic baby kale, mushroom bacon, avocado and nacho cashew cheese. All of the ingredients down to the condiments are made in-house or sourced organically and sustainably. Free WiFi is offered in a comfortable second-floor community space overlooking the El, while a backyard garden retreat has table seating for 80.
A full bar will serve creative cocktails made with freshly squeezed juices and local ingredients, an array of craft beers drawing from both local and west-coast breweries, and a selection of organic and biodynamic wines designed to match the menu and pair well with artisanal cheese selections sourced from creameries across the U.S.
The dinner menu puts a fresh spin on comfort food, including:

  • Wild Rice Collard Dolmas: with citrus hemp dressing.
  • Avocado Citrus Salad: Organic baby kale, avocado, mango, radish greens, hemp, pumpkin seeds, citrus jalapeno dressing
  • Mediterranean Tofu: Pan-seared fennel, sage, chili-rubbed tofu, wilted garlic kale, fresh tomato marinara, salt-cured olives and crispy capers
  • Heirloom Tomato Zucchini Lasagna: Thinly sliced zucchini, Macadamia ricotta, basil-arugula pesto, sundried tomato, olive oil
  • Organic Rotisserie Half Chicken: Orange-brined chicken, roasted baby potatoes, stewed collard greens, chicken jus, house-made biscuits

“We really want to have a neighborhood café where people can eat many times a week, and instead of weighing them down, it actually makes them healthier,” Nicole said.
The menu at the Front Street Cafe was created by Chef Andrew Petruzelli (XIX at the Bellevue, Grand Hyatt DC, Knock)
“The concept for our cuisine is very much related to health and happiness,” Andrew said. “We would like for people to be able to dine here daily and be better for it, by providing them with the best possible options for food they know and love.”
The space Front Street Café will occupy is one of the few 19th-century brick buildings to survive along the Front Street train corridor. During design and construction, building owner and builder Lee Larkin retained all of the original architectural details, including an intricate 3rd story tin cornice and Schuylkill Pine hardwood floors. Almost all of the additional building components where sourced and reclaimed from old Philadelphia buildings. Steps were built from joists taken from a home being demolished at Temple University, while wooden beams for the outside bar came from a warehouse at 25th and Oxford. A display cabinet on the second floor pays homage to the history of Fishtown and the Riverwards by showcasing hundreds of pre-Civil War artifacts that were discovered under the property during construction.

Front Street Café is located at 1253 N. Front Street, on the corner of Thompson Street, in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. The coffee shop and juice bar open at 6 a.m. Breakfast and brunch service runs from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. seven days a week. Dinner service runs from 4-10 p.m., with a late-night menu available until closing. A second-floor community room that seats 60 is available for private events.
