Front Street Cafe Opening in Fishtown| Press Release

Front Street Cafe Logo

Front Street Café plans to nourish, sustain Fishtown community

Philadelphia, PA –The Front Street Café, a vibrant new eatery opening on the corner of Thompson and Front streets, is the latest on a growing list of restaurants revitalizing the community of Philadelphia. There are so many new places to eat and drink in Philadelphia, such as different cafes and even some bakery options in the area. Places like The Front Street Café are just one of the many new franchises opening their doors up to the public.
Drawing inspiration from the unique character of the neighborhood, the creators of the Front Street Café aspire to do more than serve great food. From its inception, the restaurant has been designed to nourish this growing community, satisfying both body and spirit from sun up to lights out.
Long-time Fishtown resident Nicole Barclay, was driven by a strong sense of place and purpose to create a restaurant built around fresh, sustainable ingredients, with ample choices for people who have dietary preferences for health or lifestyle reasons. If you’re inspired by Nicole’s passion to start a coffee business, there’s no reason you couldn’t look at beginning your own. Often, starting a coffee shop can be difficult. This is usually because it’s not that easy to get customers coming to your business instead of some of the bigger coffee companies. However, there’s always the route of franchise opportunities instead of marketing a brand new coffee business. One of the best tips for opening a coffee shop is to ensure that potential customers can see inside the store. This can be done by installing Storefront doors to your shop, helping customers to decide whether or not to enter your cafe. This should help business as customers will want to sit inside a bright coffee shop, not a dark one. Those big windows and doors can usually be seen in most coffee shops, so they must help attract customers!
Nicole’s USP for this coffee shop is that the juice bar and coffee shop will open early to serve morning commuters, offering freshly made juices, smoothies, coffee from Counter Culture Coffee, as well as grab-and-go breakfasts and lunches, just one block away from Girard Station.
Casual brunch service will begin early and run through mid-afternoon seven days a week, with a menu offering sandwiches, salads, burgers … and breakfast tacos with more than 18 topping choices, including heirloom tomatoes, organic baby kale, mushroom bacon, avocado and nacho cashew cheese. All of the ingredients down to the condiments are made in-house or sourced organically and sustainably. Free WiFi is offered in a comfortable second-floor community space overlooking the El, while a backyard garden retreat has table seating for 80.
A full bar will serve creative cocktails made with freshly squeezed juices and local ingredients, an array of craft beers drawing from both local and west-coast breweries, and a selection of organic and biodynamic wines designed to match the menu and pair well with artisanal cheese selections sourced from creameries across the U.S.
The dinner menu puts a fresh spin on comfort food, including:

  • Wild Rice Collard Dolmas: with citrus hemp dressing.
  • Avocado Citrus Salad: Organic baby kale, avocado, mango, radish greens, hemp, pumpkin seeds, citrus jalapeno dressing
  • Mediterranean Tofu: Pan-seared fennel, sage, chili-rubbed tofu, wilted garlic kale, fresh tomato marinara, salt-cured olives and crispy capers
  • Heirloom Tomato Zucchini Lasagna: Thinly sliced zucchini, Macadamia ricotta, basil-arugula pesto, sundried tomato, olive oil
  • Organic Rotisserie Half Chicken: Orange-brined chicken, roasted baby potatoes, stewed collard greens, chicken jus, house-made biscuits

“We really want to have a neighborhood café where people can eat many times a week, and instead of weighing them down, it actually makes them healthier,” Nicole said.
The menu at the Front Street Cafe was created by Chef Andrew Petruzelli (XIX at the Bellevue, Grand Hyatt DC, Knock)
“The concept for our cuisine is very much related to health and happiness,” Andrew said. “We would like for people to be able to dine here daily and be better for it, by providing them with the best possible options for food they know and love.”
The space Front Street Café will occupy is one of the few 19th-century brick buildings to survive along the Front Street train corridor. During design and construction, building owner and builder Lee Larkin retained all of the original architectural details, including an intricate 3rd story tin cornice and Schuylkill Pine hardwood floors. Almost all of the additional building components where sourced and reclaimed from old Philadelphia buildings. Steps were built from joists taken from a home being demolished at Temple University, while wooden beams for the outside bar came from a warehouse at 25th and Oxford. A display cabinet on the second floor pays homage to the history of Fishtown and the Riverwards by showcasing hundreds of pre-Civil War artifacts that were discovered under the property during construction.
“Everything in this place has a story to tell,” Lee said. “And the story of this restaurant is tied to the story of this neighborhood – refreshed, revitalized and bursting with energy.”
About The Front Street Cafe

Dinner service runs from 4-10 p.m., with a late-night menu available until closing. A second-floor community room that seats 60 is available for private events. Why You Need To Pay Attention to Snapchat

This is a great post about the future of Snapchat originally posted by social media guru Gary Vaynerchuk. Original Article Here
Two big things happened recently on Snapchat. One, the release of Madonna’s new video. Two, the addition of the Discovery feature, which puts major iconic media companies front and center with unique content for the platform. Both of these things have created a frenzy of emails in my inbox about Snapchat. And it’s about damn time you guys noticed.
As someone who’s been a very strong advocate of Snapchat marketing since the early days, I’m getting enormous gratification out of receiving these emails. People are asking me what they should be doing on it, saying “Okay, now I believe you.” It’s been fascinating to watch, and I give kudos to Snapchat’s team. Because no matter what you think of Discovery personally, you cannot deny that, as a product feature, it has absolutely brought the mainstream business world’s attention to the platform.
Now, knowing all of this, I am asking all of you for one thing: please do not be on the wrong side of history.
I need everyone to start realizing what happens when platforms mature right in front of your eyes, and you miss it. The way I was able to bet on Snapchat so publicly several years ago wasn’t because of any secret knowledge or talent; it was based on good old fashioned scale.
When you see a platform gain 50 to 100 million teenaged users (as we are seeing currently with Instagram and prior to that Facebook), it will eventually age up. These teens will eventually graduate high school and go to college. Then they will graduate college and head into their life, whether that’s work or family or whatever.
Guess what comes along with them?
The app that allows them to communicate with the largest percentage of their social graph.
This is the reason so many people in their mid-thirties right now still use Facebook. All their high school and college friends use it. They’re all on there. It’s part of their behavior. It’s the same reason your grandma wants to talk on the phone. It became the standard form of communication for their social circle. And the standard form of communication for a lot of sixteen to nineteen year olds right now is being built on the behavior of Snapchat.
This is why I highly recommend everyone pay attention to the Discover feature and how people are consuming content there. Swiping left to right for new stuff, up and down for depth. If you want to market to twenty year olds in the next twenty-four to thirty-six months within a mobile environment, using that cadence and feature set might be a great place to start.
Everything ages up. People don’t leave forms of communication behind. They stick to what will allow them to communicate the most and at a large scale. Pay attention to where the younger generations are going. That’s all there is to it. And get into Snapchat before you miss your chance entirely.

Epic Restaurant Response to Brat Yelp Reviewer

One of the offerings of Small Talk Media is “Reputation Management” were we make sure that top review sites have nice things to say about our clients instead of what you see below. Once in awhile we do find a particularly terrible Yelper. This person is easily identified as their reviews are completely baseless. The reviewer below is especially bad and I have no problem sharing her personal page so you can let her know yourself. In this situation the Restaurant does something even Yelp says you should never do, they defend themselves. While normally this just makes the restaurant owner look stupid in this case it’s completely justified. Enjoy..

Most unfriendly and arrogant restaurant in KC.
Just called Voltaire to try to order some food because we’re in a late business meeting across the street.  First, they refused to answer our question about what type of broth is used in the risotto.  Then they said they won’t pack food to go.  My husband spoke to the manager and explained that we’re in a conference room across the street, and asked if they can pack our dinner (which we would pick up).  The hostess flat-out refused to answer our question about the food or to try and work with us so we could get food in our meeting.  My husband asked to speak with the manager.   The manager, Jamie, said, “our food is plated beautifully, and we can’t put it in a ‘to go’ container.”  So thanks, Jamie, we’ll just starve. (What the manager said is just not true by the way–we’ve eaten there before, and they did pack our food to go.)  When my husband said that he was going to post a Yelp review about the way the restaurant was treating us, the manager questioned, “Are you a grown man and an adult?”
Yes, Jamie, we are grown adults, and we do not do business with people who behave like you do.
We regularly travel to NYC and eat at a variety of restaurants, which are more than happy to accommodate people by packing food to go.  This restaurant thinks they’re too good for their customers.  They will soon learn that if you ignore your customers, they’re going to start ignoring you.  I would not even give this place one star after this experience, and I’m dismayed by their unprofessional and arrogant behavior.
Response by the Restaurant
I sincerely apologize that we don’t offer “take-out” food at our restaurant.  Being a Yelp user, I’m sure you were aware that on our Yelp business page, on the right side of the screen, it lists details about our establishment.  There is an item listed “Take-Out : No”.  We have never offered take-out food as we believe the food we prepare should be presented as we see fit, (usually) on a plate inside the dining room.
As for the risotto, its made with a vegetable stock – this dish is vegetarian, and I’m certain that who you were speaking with wanted to make extra certain the information provided to you was accurate.
On your previous visits, you say you have witnessed dishes being boxed up as proof that we provide “take-out” food. Although we do allow our guests to take their uneaten food with them in to-go boxes after they have dined with us, we have never offered “take-out” food.
If you were actually starving, as in a life threatening condition requiring nutritional sustenance, we would be happy to assist you..we do make exceptions for emergency situations.
Our general manager did question the age/maturity of your husband after he became combative and threatened us with a negative Yelp review if we did not alter our operational practice and provide him with “take-out” food.  15 minutes later you indeed came through with this threat.  I can assure you that we don’t offer “take-out” food because we feel we are “too good” for our customers; we just prefer to have our guests dine with us, allowing for the proper presentation (and temperature) of their fare that has been skillfully prepared by our kitchen.
I am very pleased that you frequent New York.  We travel often as well.  And I can assure you that there are many restaurants in NYC that do not offer “take-out” food.  Although there are many other options that do – in Kansas City as well (Go Royals!).
It was made REPEATEDLY clear in the conversation with your husband that he is a lawyer.  Let me provide the following analogy/role reversal…it may assist in clarifying your request.
YOU: I want to hire you to handle my divorce.
ME: But, I’m a tax lawyer.
YOU: I don’t care…I want you to handle my divorce.
ME: Sorry, but I don’t practice that form of law.
YOU: Just handle my divorce, I’ll pay you…it will be fine.
ME: I don’t feel comfortable providing my services as a divorce lawyer, as I am a tax lawyer.  You won’t receive the service you are wanting or that I am willing to provide.
YOU: Well, I travel to NYC often, and in NYC, Tax lawyers handle my divorce litigation all the time. I don’t know what the problem is.  I’ve told you I’m a chef, right?
ME: Well, that’s nice sir, but I really can’t help you.  It goes against my business practice.
YOU: If you don’t represent me in my divorce, I’m going to post it all over the [most frequented social media review of lawyers] that you refused to provide me with the service I requested, and make baseless allegations about how you are very pretentious, arrogant and unprofessional. I will also try to prevent you from getting any additional business by damning you on said social media platform. Now will you represent me?
ME: I don’t take kindly to threats.
Thanks for your feedback.  We will let you know if we decide in the future to practice divorce law, I mean, provide “take-out” food.

The Wrap Shack gets a Major Facelift

Philadelphia, PA, The Wrap Shack at 120 S. 18th Street has been regarded as the Rittenhouse Dive bar for quite some time now. They’ve always had one of the best selections of craft beer, they’re bar food is solid and they have plenty of TVs to catch the games.

With the fall quickly approaching owner Scott Hockfield decided that it was time to make a big move and completely update the Wrap Shack. Some of his updates include; a brand new bar that adds more seats and foot room, new bar shelving, 30 new liquors with a heavy focus on aged bourbon, some great signed local sports memorabilia, new menu items and a bright new awning you can see from Rittenhouse square. Scott estimated that his upgrades to the small space at 18th and Sansom totaled $20k.

How Atlantic City Failed Revel Casino

While my agency certainly doesn’t specialize in casino operations, most of our clients are bars, restaurants and nightclubs which happen to make up the vast majority of Revel’s offerings to the public. From the start, I knew this concept casino was a risky move but was hoping that they would be able to pull it off. After all, a lot of people prefer to bet (or แทงบอล
in Thai) online nowadays. The risks were apparently from day one.
When plans for Revel started the idea was to bring a touch of class to the ailing Atlanitc City marketplace. Entertainment and luxury were at the core of the concept. Casino’s similar to Revel are thriving in Las Vegas, take the Cosmopolitan and Wynn casinos, they’re both geared towards millennials with entertainment being at the heart of their business plan. However, the internet has become the go-to place for people looking to make a bet; casino phone games seem to be the way things are going so trying to set up a physical casino in this climate should be challenging. Gambling is an after thought but they’re able to remain profitable by attracting a consumer that isn’t as interested in hitting the tables or betting the ponies. By replicating this same idea Revel planned to bring in and retain this highly sought after demographic. However, they failed to realize the attraction of 100 Free Spins at online casino outlets would mean failure was inevitable.

So why did it fail?

Most conventional media outlets haven’t touched on this and why would they, most of their readers are the same people that would never step foot in a casino without being able to smoke a pack of cigarettes at the poker table. Why would they opt for such a thing when they could smoke freely whilst going on their computers to uk online casinos and get the experience they want there instead? Still, the place did have some merits. With an amazing view of the ocean, natural light beaming through the glass roof, more then a dozen restaurants from famous NYC and Philly chefs and two amazing night clubs from Vegas titans AMG you’d think that Revel Casino was set for A.C. success
Simply put, the majority of consumers that come to Atlantic City aren’t interested in any of the things I mentioned above. They want to be locked in front of penny slots for hours not knowing what time it is, they want to smoke a pack of cigarettes at the poker table, they love to hate their black jack dealer, they want to remove themselves from reality and they love handing their retirement funds to greedy corporate tyrants.
I don’t personally feel like Revel was a terrible idea in Atlantic City, I feel like it was before it’s time. When the baby boomers are in the ground Revel will succeed.

5 ways to drive business with Yelp

Make your Business Awesome on Yelp

For those of you that were at the philadelphia bar and nightlife convention you already heard me talk a little bit about managing your reputation online. Having a good reputation is essential for the growth and prevalence of your business. Anything from bad customer service to negative reviews can lead to an undesirable reputation; this explains the number of companies that access reviews management for agencies. Having a stable and respected reputation will ensure sales and drive your business to outgrow competitors. I mentioned working with Yelp to improve your star rating instead of ignoring it. You may also want to try to conduct an SEO audit on your site if you’re concerned that your search rankings aren’t as strong as you’d like as this is another thing that is affecting your company’s reputation and its discovery. Here’s my list of the 5 things you can start doing today that will immediately help to build your online reputation through Yelp.com.

  1. Claim your Yelp Business page. This can be a bit of a process if your email address isn’t @[businessname].com but it’s simple enough to request a pin number in the mail. Yelp has a separate login for business owners, biz.yelp.com Screen Shot 2014-06-02 at 10.02.43 AM

  2. Once you have your Yelp business page claimed you need to make sure that all of the information about your business is 100% up to date. Yelp will guide you through this process making it simple for you complete all of the necessary content. Click the tab on the left that says “Business Information” to get started. Screen Shot 2014-06-02 at 10.02.55 AM

  3. Respond to your reviews. On the left side of the dashboard you will see a “reviews” tab. Click that and then click “respond privately” to every review that anyone has given you thus far. It’s Yelp, so you’re bound to have a few unfavorable reviews, but please don’t think this is an opportunity to set them straight. Simply ask the person to give you another try and promise that they’ll have a better experience the next time they come in. You’re limited to 5 responses per day.

  4. Add awesome photos. It’s your establishment, why would you want customer photos to dictate the first impression that consumers receive when visiting your Yelp page. Get some amazing food photos taken in natural light and post them where it says “photos”. And make sure you write something in the caption. This will ensure that you’re given the best possible chance to lure new customers into your establishment.

  5. Last but certainly not least, add a check in offer. This is the one free tool that yelp has that will drive new customers directly through your door. I love giving away a free drink with a purchase.

Reputation management is one service that I truly love offering at Small Talk Media. There’s something truly rewarding about taking a client’s Yelp page from 3 stars to 5 knowing the impact that has on his or her business. If you have a business with a great product or service but that isn’t reflected online please reach out to us right away. Yelp is just the beginning of a great online reputation.

A few things you didn’t know about Google Drive

This is a great article originally from Mashable. Easily one of my favorite sites.
Google Drive is here to make your life easy, but we’re here to make it even easier.
The multifaceted feature that allows you to create documents, photos, spreadsheets, drawings and more has boundless abilities. However, with Drive’s constant updates and added hacks, we’re only scratching the surface of what it can really do. You can learn how to improve your workflow with Google Drive, I bet you didn’t know that!

Here are eight tip and tricks to maximize your Google usage.

  • Googlepuppy

    1. Crop photos

There are several kinds of photo cropping options in Google Drive. Aside from the typical square or rectangle, you can also crop your pics into different shapes, such as hearts and smiley faces.
Open an image, then click on it and select the Crop icon in the toolbar to mess around with the feature.
    IMAGE: GOOGLE
  • 2. Experiment with add-ons

For documents and spreadsheets, try out one of the many available add-ons. They include EasyBib (which creates a quick bibliography), Twitter curator (which lets you search and save tweets to your doc) or Translate (which translates text into other languages).
You can find add-ons in the toolbar when you open a doc or spreadsheet.
    VIDEO: YOUTUBE, GOOGLE
  • Drive-activity

    3. Check out your Drive activity

Want to track all of the changes you or someone else has made to your Drive? Open Drive and click on the small “i” icon in the righthand corner. All of your activity will pop up.
    IMAGE: GOOGLE
  • Testing

    4. Look at your revision history

Speaking of activity, here’s a tip that’s hiding in plain sight. You can see up to 100 revisions made on any of your documents by clicking “File” and “See revision history.”
    IMAGE: GOOGLE
  • 5. Use spreadsheets offline

If you’re a spreadsheet fanatic, this feature is going to change your life. It received a number of upgrades last December, such as new functions like averageif (which gives you the average of specified cells), and unlimited cells, formulas and columns.
You can also use it without an Internet connection. Any spreadsheet you edit while you’re offline will simply update once you’re connected to the web.
    VIDEO: YOUTUBE, GOOGLE
  • Shortcut

    6. Shortcut to keyboard shortcuts

There are loads of keyboard shortcuts that I use all the time to make life easier. For example, “CTRL-Shift-T” to bring back a tab you accidentally close or “F11” to view your program in full screen mode. Want to know all the keyboard shortcuts for super fast access to everything? Hit “shift” and “?” and Drive will pull up a list of all keyboard shortcuts – a shortcut for your shortcuts.
    IMAGE: GOOGLE
  • 7. Customize who sees what

If you’re sharing something on Drive with someone else, you can customize the settings for what type of access each person gets. For example, you can allow or forbid someone from making comments or edits.
    VIDEO: YOUTUBE, GOOGLE HELP
  • Attachments

    8. Make your email life easier

Gmail limits the size of email attachments to 25MB, but you can bypass that by sending an attachment via your Drive. When you compose an email, click on the small Drive icon, and from there pick what you want to add.
When someone sends you any attachment via email, you can save it straight to your Drive. Hover over the attachment and you’ll see the Drive icon. Click on it and place it where you like.
